What next for Mayweather? – Three potential fights for Pretty Boy
Published:The self-proclaimed “best ever” moved his unbeaten record to 46-0 with a majority decision victory over Marcos Maidana and with the dust just about settled at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, thoughts have already turned to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next opponent.
The pound-for-pound king is next due out in September as he continues to fulfil his six-fight contract with Showtime and, as ever there are plenty of options for The Money Team as he looks to keep his unblemished record intact.
Our news team takes a look at the top three candidates to face the 37-year-old American as he plots his route to a 50-0 record.
For much of the early part of 2014 Amir Khan, who is 5/1 to win any potential fight against Mayweather, thought May would be his date in the spotlight with a fight against the unbeaten American all but signed. But in boxing what Mayweather says goes and the champ ignored the Brit and chose Maidana as his 46th opponent.
After an impressive victory against former Ricky Hatton opponent Luis Collazo on Pretty Boy’s undercard, Khan has shown his credentials at welterweight and put himself back in line for a shot at Mayweather.
One stumbling block could be the timing of the fight with Khan’s adherence to Ramadan but it is a fight the public want to see and maybe, just maybe, Mayweather might be tempted for a fight across the pond in London!
The Argentine was not given a hope in hell of toppling Mayweather at the MGM Grand last Saturday night but it’s fair to say Marcos Maidana exceeded expectations with his performance.
The former WBA welterweight champion put Mayweather under intense pressure for 12 rounds in Las Vegas and many people thought he had done enough to inflict the first defeat of the American’s career.
This has led to a huge clamour for a rematch of The Moment, an option both fighters are open to.
The unbeaten American has made no secret of his desire for a shot at Mayweather and this could well be an option the 37-year-old takes after his below par display against Maidana.
There is no doubting the boxing skills and power of Danny Garcia, who is 28-0 with 16 career knockouts, but he is a smaller man than “Money” and this could appeal to him after being roughed up by Maidana.
As part of the Golden Boy Stable, and advised by Al Haymon, this could be an easy fight to make for the September date.
