Meet the Man United kids who’ll make Giggs’ promise a reality
Published:The message was clear from Ryan Giggs even before he took to the microphone in his post match address to the Old Trafford faithful: here are the next crop of young players to pin your hopes on.
The Welshman handed senior debuts to 18-year-old James Wilson, who hit the headlines with a brace in the 3-1 Hull win, and 20-year-old midfielder Tom Lawrence, while also selecting early-season star Adnan Januzaj on the right wing.
With United 6/1 to win the Premier League next season, it’s clear Giggs will adopt a youthful policy to try and achieve the feat should he be handed the Manchester United reigns on a permanent basis. But, aside from the trio that faced Hull, who are the other kids he could call on?
Michael Keane
With club captain Nemanja Vidic bidding farewell to the Old Trafford club at the end of the season, 21-year-old Keane should feel confident of stepping into the United first-team set up in the Serb’s absence.
A stint on loan at Blackburn this term was very successful for the Irishman, who made 13 starts and scored three times on his way to racking up the fourth highest Whoscored.com rating during his time with Rovers.
Jesse Lingard
Warrington-native Lingard has spent two loan spells away from United this season, scoring six times in 13 games for Birmingham before switching to Brighton.
His stint with the south-coast club was particularly pleasing, as he was praised for his showing on the final day of the regular season as the Seagulls claimed a dramatic place in the playoffs.
Jack Barmby
The son of former England midfielder Nick dropped down to League Two to find a temporary home this season, helping Hartlepool stave off Football League relegation with five goals in just 12 starts.
With Wilson settling quickly into the Red Devils front line, Barmby may not be too far behind next season after displaying a clinical streak in front of goal for the Monkey Hangers with some cool finishes.
