Moore and Stoute to deliver for the Queen again at York
Published:The Channel 4 cameras descend for York’s Dante meeting with four contests including the Musidora Stakes at 2:45 to be broadcasted. Below we pick out our three best bets of the afternoon’s action, starting with the day’s highlight.
Ryan Moore and Sir Michael Stoute combined to great effect for the Queen at Windsor on Monday night and with doubts surrounding the favourite’s suitability on the forecasted soft ground the main selection for the day has to be Shama.
After finishing third on debut at Kempton last November under Shane Kelly, Moore took the reins for her reappearance last month and there was a lot to like about how she went about her business when scorching away by four and a half lengths.
There’s no chance the daughter of Danehill Dancer will have things all her own way with much better opposition in the race but with question marks hanging over the other main protagonists, she could be the answer.
Stoute also has history in this contest having taken the prize back to Freemason Lodge twice in the last decade.
Next Best – Jamaican Bolt – 2:15 York
Jamaican Bolt hasn’t visited the winners’ enclosure for getting on two years but the talented six-year-old should be supported here to improve on his pleasing seasonal reappearance.
Geoffrey Oldroyd’s charge finished third when sent off favourite at Newcastle at the beginning of April and although that would have disappointed some there is no doubt this is the race he has been aimed for.
The son of Pivotal knows the track having been here on four occasions in the past and although his best effort was a third placed finish back in 2011 that shouldn’t put anyone off.
Jamaican Bolt’s best form has come over a furlong shorter, however, with come cut in the ground predicted the conditions should suit and in a wide-open race things could fall his way.
Lively Longshot – Clever Cookie– 1:45 York
An extremely competitive renewal with some proven performers spearheading the betting, however, it may pay to take a chance on the least exposed of all, Clever Cookie, to deliver a surprise.
Peter Niven isn’t a trainer many will have heard much about but his six-year-old created a really good impression when winning on his level debut at the end of last month.
A prolific performer over timber where he crossed the line in front in five of his eight races, Niven rated those performances highly enough to let him take his chance in the Scottish Champion Hurdle where he failed to fire.
However, the fact he has managed to string victories together in the past is a useful knack whatever the challenge and it would be a surprise if he didn’t go well.
