Mourinho revelation makes Man City man most likely target

| 11.05.2014

All season long Jose Mourinho has made no secret of the fact he’d like a new striker to work with at Chelsea, but his latest comments may have given the clearest indication yet as to who that might be.

Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o clearly haven’t been playing to the Portuguese boss’ world-beating standard this season and all three are vulnerable to the chop come the summer, with Torres and Ba regularly linked to moves away and the Cameroonian’s contract expiring.

Whatever happens, a big-money signing up front looks on the cards at Stamford Bridge once the transfer window open and according to the rumours in the press, Atletico Madrid’s goal-scoring phenomenon Diego Costa looks to be their number one target.

However, Jose Mourinho’s opinion on who he felt should have won the Player of the Year award on the Premier League means their could be a new name on the head of his striking shopping list.

According to the Special One, Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko deserved the coveted gong over the efforts of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

Insisting that the award should always go to the champions, Mourinho picked the Bosnian striker over Suarez, saying: “He made the difference, Dzeko. In this moment, I think he has 16 goals. Sixteen goals for the third striker is something spectacular, and not just that, the quality of his game.”

The comments make Mourinho’s admiration for the player obvious but his referral to the City man’s standing in the pecking order is also intriguing.

Dzeko rarely gets a look in with Sergio Aguero at peak fitness and Alvaro Negredo on top form and it seems the Chelsea manager is acutely aware of that.

In the search for his new first-choice front man Mourinho could well try and persuade Dzeko to jump ship from City to be the leading light in his new-look Chelsea strikeforce.
