World Cup Countdown: France priced up to keep sheets clean

Published:

There’s now just 25 days to go until the World Cup in Brazil can begin and to celebrate, Ladbrokes have unleashed another one of their special prices for the tournament.

This time, France are the recipients of the special offer, with the bookie going 25/1 that Didier Deschamps’ men go through the group stage without conceding a single goal.

Drawn in Group E with Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras, there’s a great chance that Les Bleus manage to pull of the perfect defensive display, even if recent World Cup visits haven’t been too special.

The French went through qualifying for Brazil having conceded just six goals in eight matches. Considering Spain were in their same group, that’s certainly a solid foundation to build on and with no teams of the same quality as the defending champions, confidence should be high that a full set of clean sheets can be achieved.

World Cups for the French have taken a familiar pattern of late, with appearances in the final followed up by disappointing, group stage exits four years later.

Having been knocked out in the group stage in South Africa four years ago, after failing to win a single game, history suggests that a route to the final is already marked out for Franck Ribery and co.

As 4/5 favourites to win their group, France are certainly expected to move beyond the first round of the tournament at least and with a host of weak-scoring sides for company, the 25/1 on offer looks a good bet.

Switzerland are the biggest threat, having topped their qualification group, but having scored just 17 goals in a group containing the likes of Cyprus and Albania, can’t be considered formidable scorers.

Ecuador are one of the South American sides more favourable to face in familiar surroundings, with no big-name striker to scare opponents, while Honduras are the unrivalled minnows of the group by some way.
