Brazil to be on song for goals against Song-less Cameroon

Luis Felipe Scolari’s Brazil have yet to kick into gear at this World Cup, but that could change against the hapless Cameroon, who will be without Alex Song following his first-half red card against Croatia in the previous group fixture.

The former Arsenal favourite has been handed a three-match ban by FIFA, while the Indomitable Lions appeared to be in disarray towards the end of their previous fixture with teammates Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Benjamin Moukandjo clashing in the wake of Croatia’s fourth goal.

It doesn’t look like it will get any better against the Selecao either with Cameroon already out of the competition and star striker Samuel Eto’o unlikely to start having failed to recover from the knee injury that kept him out of their previous game.

All of which makes the odds of 3/1 being offered by Ladbrokes on Brazil winning by four goals or more looks too good to ignore.

Already likely to finish bottom of the group, Cameroon have little to play for while, for Brazil, only a big win over the African side will ensure they avoid the winner of Group B.

Several of Brazil’s big stars will also be keen to use the game to silence some of the doubters, with striker Fred and, to a lesser extent, Neymar out to score some goals and get the hosts moving again after a lacklustre 0-0 draw with Mexico.

Neymar notched up two goals in the opener against Cameroon conquerers Croatia and, provided he puts in a similar performance, could be among the goals again.

Fred, meanwhile, will be desperate to prove his worth with a goal or two having failed to find the net for the Selecao in their previous group fixtures.

One man who will be eager to help the 30-year-old find the net is Dani Alves, with the Brazil full-back recently describing Alan Shearer’s criticism of the former Lyon striker as “moronic” in a recent interview.

“He [Shearer] lacked respect towards Fred and his comments diminished the game of football. I pity this kind of person,” he told reporters on Friday.

Cameroon have something of a track record for heavy losses, going down 5-1 to Portugal in a recent friendly and with Brazil out to prove a point, a big win is the one to back.
