A Federer stutter headlines our best bets for Wimbledon day eight

Published:

As the Wimbledon procession rolls ever closer to the trophy-giving stage, it’s time to delve into the doubles scene to help flesh out our three best bets for day eight.

The singles competition may not have gone too well for them, but they’re still here slugging it out with their partner to try and win a Grand Slam title. Here are our selections:

Roger Federer to beat Tommy Robredo 3-1 @ 11/4

The last time Federer faced the Spanish world number 22 was in the US Open in 2013 and he lost.

That defeat snapped a 10-game winning streak the Swiss had enjoyed over Robredo and his skills have only grown wearier with age since then.

The Prince of Grass hasn’t dropped a set so far in these Wimbledon championships, but will be hard pushed to keep that streak alive against an opponent who toppled Jerzy Janowicz in five sets last time out.

Benneteau and Roger-Vasselin to beat Butorac and Klaasen @ 8/15

Neither of the fancied pair in this match made it beyond the second round in the singles, but are starting to find their groove as a pairing.

The number four seeds have made hard work of their route to the third round so far, failing to win a match in straight sets, but should have enough quality to see off Butorac and Klaasen, who have struggled to this point without being tested.

Simona Halep to beat Zarina Diyas 2-0 @ 2/5

Third seed Halep broke down the Grand Slam barriers that had previously blocked her path beyond the fourth round at the Australian Open at the start of the season and hasn’t looked back.

Having made her first Grand Slam quarter final in that tournament, she reached the final of the French Open last time out.

She has only dropped one set in the tournament so far and allowed Diyas only five games the last time she faced the Kazakh, beating her 6-1, 6-4 in her run to that Aussie Open quarter final.
