Ladbrokes flirt with huge payout through England v Uruguay offer

If England’s match against Uruguay in Sao Paulo ends in defeat and Italy and Costa Rica draw in the other Group D fixture, then Roy Hodgson’s World Cup campaign will be cut short one game from home.

While that will be a travesty for the former Liverpool, West Brom and Fulham boss an England defeat would be bittersweet for Ladbrokes customers.

That’s because the company have pledged to refund all losing bets on certain markets should Luis Suarez and co seal break English hearts.

Any losing single bets, to a £25 maximum stake, placed on either the correct score, first goalscorer or scorecast markets will be recouped with a free-bet token, making the match a bit of a license to hunt some pricey punts.

There’s little to dissuade punters to get involved in their desired markets, with the potential return of Suarez to the Uruguay fold likely to attract plenty of attention in the first goalscorer stakes.

The Liverpool man is the 5/1 favourite to open the game’s scoring, a mantle that’s thoroughly expected after the season he’s just completed at Anfield.

His domestic teammate turned international rival, Daniel Sturridge, is next in the market at 6s and has scored in three of the last five England matches.

Over the course of the last five meetings between the two sides, two scores have repeated themselves.

0-0, which is a 9/1 shot, has been returned twice, as has 2-1 (once for each team). It’s 9/1 that England seal a win by that scoreline.

Ladbrokes have already felt the pinch on an offer of this kind, as they had to refund losing bets to the tune of £1m after Italy’s 2-1 win over the Three Lions in the Group D opener:
