Liverpool look to benefit from Newcastle United star’s exile
Published:Newcastle United’s loss could end up being Liverpool’s gain when it comes to Hatem Ben Arfa, with the troubled midfielder all set to depart St James’ Park this summer.
The Reds are currently in the market for midfield reinforcements and with the Frenchman out of favour with the Toon after reportedly clashing with manager Alan Pardew towards the end of last season, it could be a match made in heaven.
Liverpool were previously linked with a move for the former Marseille and Lyon star, who has been valued at around £6m – a significantly lower transfer fee than the one currently being quoted for Southampton’s Adam Lallana.
Ben Arfa would undoubtedly be open to such a move too not only because of his recent bust-up with Pardew but also because a move to the Merseysiders would offer the Frenchman the opportunity to play in the Champions League.
A Premier League switch to the Reds could also boost his chances with the France national team, with the attacking midfielder set to watch the World Cup from home, having been left out of Didier Deschamps’ squad for the finals.
One man backing Ben Arfa for an imminent move is former Newcastle teammate Yohann Cabaye.
The PSG midfielder departed the Magpies last term in a deal worth £20m and backed his compatriot to shine away from Tyneside.
“For me, this is one of the players I’ve played with who has the highest quality,” he told reporters.
“If he decides to return home, that will be good for the French league.”
Ben Arfa would be a welcome arrival at Anfield, with Liverpool looking to challenge for the title next season.
Rickie Lambert has already been recruited from Southampton while the club looks set to add Emre Can to their ranks in the coming days.
