US Open: Fowler among five value picks for a top-10 finish

Published:

Those au fait with betting on golf’s flagship events will recognise the agony of their chosen players missing out on those e/w prices by a whisker as your ‘winner’ falls just shy of those all-important pay-out slots.

Therefore, ahead of the second Major of the year at Pinehurst, Christian Crowther widens the net to look for five value-seeking selections that have a decent chance of making the top 10 at the 2014 US Open.

Graeme McDowell @ 4/1

Seeing the 2010 winner at this price should light up punters’ eyes, as G-Mac has a real affinity with this event, despite putting together a scratchy season so far. The Northern Irishman has made seven of eight cuts, hit four top 20s and finished 1-14-2 within the last four years.

Bill Haas @ 5/1

A native of North Carolina where Pinehurst Resort resides, the American is not selected for his local ties alone. Haas ranks 17th in GIR on the PGA Tour and arrives fresh off the back of an eighth-place finish at last week’s Memorial Tournament.

Rickie Fowler @ 6/1

The USA’s favourite luminous-apparel donning golfer continues to flirt with Major success, adding his third top-10 finish at a flagship event with a T5 at this year’s Masters. The rigours of Pinehurst No.2 are often likened to those of the Augusta lay-out.

Stephen Gallacher @ 8/1

Fifth at the recent BMW PGA Championship, the understated Scot is the polar opposite of Fowler in the style stakes, but is proving a top-10 hunter this season. Gallacher followed a commanding performance at Wentworth with a near-miss second at the Nordea Masters last time out; his third top-10 in his last four events.

Ryan Palmer @ 10/1

Five top-10s already this season matches the Texan’s best effort as a pro, the last of which was three weeks back at Colonial. Proximity to the hole is a big stat given the amount of birdie putts sunk from inside 10 foot at Pinehurst, and Palmer ranks 22nd on Tour there.
