Rachel Riley’s World Cup pick Chile halved in price

If only we’d listened to Ladbrokes’ World Cup ambassador Rachel Riley before the tournament!

That’s what the nation was screaming last night as Chile dumped holders Spain out of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory at the Estádio Maracanã.

The South Americans were Rachel Riley’s World Cup pick before the tournament with the football fanatic, Oxbridge graduate, TV presenter and professional number cruncher running the rule over each of the 32 teams involved.

As part of a statistical study commissioned by the bookmaker, Ladbrokes challenged the Countdown host to delve through the record books and pull out key patterns and indicators ahead of the 2014 tournament.

With so many variables and influences to be considered including goal averages, goal scorers, win rates, climate, geography and all the pre-tournament hype and expectation, the prediction method required a combination of both mathematical logic and human reasoning.

What followed was Chile, priced at 40/1 with Ladbrokes before the tournament, emerging as Rachel’s surprise selection to win the World Cup.

And Jorge Sampaoli’s side have made a mockery of their pre-tournament odds by beating Australia and Spain on their way to qualification for the second round.

Chile, ranked 14th in the FIFA world rankings, have halved in price since the tournament got underway and are now 20/1 for glory in Brazil.

While they are still an excellent price to win a first World Cup, let’s admit it, we all should have listened to Rachel!
