Royal Ascot day 4: Bank on Ballydoyle with Adelaide selection

Ballydoyle’s finest clicked into gear yesterday with Bracelet and Leading Light landing top honours on day three of Royal Ascot.

And in King Edward VII Stakes chance Adelaide, trainer Aidan O’Brien can look forward to more success as the five-day festival nears its conclusion.

Much like Derby winner Australia, O’Brien’s three-year-old is perfectly bred to tackle a mile-and-a-half.

And if he can continue his progression the market leader will be very tough to beat.

Here are our three best bets for day four of Royal Ascot.

NAP – Adelaide – King Edward VII Stakes (15:45)

Few would write off Frankie Dettori landing a fourth King Edward VII Stakes with his well-backed mount Bunker potentially one of the key protagonists here.

However, a poor recent performance over 10 furlongs in the Dante Stakes is cause for concern over this 1m4f trip while fellow York runner Odeon is also facing another step up in class.

On breeding and form, Ballydoyle’s ADELAIDE appears to have this one sewn up with the son of Galileo barely troubled when landing a useful Group 3 win at the Curragh last month.

NB – Lightning Thunder – Coronation Stakes (16:25)

We’re choosing to ignore market favouritism in our examination of the only Group 1 race on day four of Royal Ascot.

My Titania has had a lengthy spell away from the track which immediately puts us off, even more so given that the past 10 winners had each enjoyed a run in the 50 days leading up to their Coronation Stakes assault.

Preference goes to LIGHTNING THUNDER instead having finished a game runner-up in both the English 1000 Guineas and subsequent Irish edition last time out.

Meanwhile, others may point to the Ascot form of Kiyoshi and Rizeena being significant.

But with just two of the last 10 winners enjoying a previous victory at this Berkshire track, course history is not necessarily a key indicator of Coronation success.

Lively Longshot – Peace and War – Albany Stakes (14:30)

The opening race is certainly a tricky one to unpick but with Jamie Spencer riding four winners in the past 10 years of this renewal we’re plumping for his mount, PEACE AND WAR.

A narrow debut success at Lingfield might not be much to write home about but given his previous victors went off at odds of 8/1, 16/1, 50/1 and 10/1 respectively, there is a trend for big-priced winners.
