Published:

It’s very much the business end of the group stages and true to their generous World Cup form, Ladbrokes are peppering the upcoming action with another flurry of first goalscorer boosts.

The matches in question will cast the final vote on who stays on to party and who goes home forlorn in Groups E and F.

Nigeria v Argentina. Messi – Was 5/2, NOW 3/1

He’s been labelled a genius, a magician and force of nature. Well, now Argentina’s number 10 can add ‘bacon-saver’ to his endless list of accolades.
Messi’s stoppage-time goal against Iran, his second of the World Cup already, saved serious blushes and means the Barcelona ace and his teammates can now lift the handbrake against the Super Eagles.

Bosnia v Iran. Dzeko – Was 4/1, NOW 9/2

Bosnia’s first ever appearance at the finals may have ended prematurely but they’ll want to leave on a high against this plucky Iranian side.

Dzeko finished the Premier League season with a flourish and although he hasn’t found the net yet in Brazil, des, the Manchester City man did fire in eight shots in the defeat to Nigeria.

Honduras v Switzerland. Shaqiri – Was 7/1, NOW 8/1

Defeat to France has left Switzerland’s progression on a knife-edge, though they should at least get the win they require against point-less Honduras.

Therefore, it’s time for their big players to come to the fore and create a goal-difference cushion. Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri hasn’t netted yet, though he did bag in their final warm-up game.

Ecuador v France. Giroud – Was 9/2, NOW 11/2

In from the start for Les Bleus’ commanding win over the Swiss, Giroud promptly set about doing what he does best.

The former Montpellier striker scored the opening goal of the game and his all-round play should warrant another place in Didier Deschamps’ line-up against Ecuador.
