Yet another centre-back has heart set on Liverpool switch

Published:

One way or another, Liverpool seem desperate to land themselves a centre-back this summer.

Their obsession with Southampton’s squad hasn’t quite ended, as they continue to haggle with the south coast club over Croatian defender Dejan Lovren.

Currently at an impasse on that particular juncture, with the Saints holding out for £25m and Liverpool only willing to spend £20m, a new option seems to have presented itself.

Like Lovren, who insists his head is already at Anfield following the failed first bid, Cardiff’s Steven Caulker is equally sweet on making the red half of Merseyside his next home.

A clause in the England international’s contract allows him to leave the Bluebirds following their relegation from the Premier League last season and, as one of the more impressive performers at the Welsh club, plenty are interested in his availability.

The former Tottenham blocker has already had talks with Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers this summer, but is stalling on any decision between the two in the hope that the Reds come calling.

Keen to further his international haul, which currently stands at one cap, Caulker is eyeing a move to a more ambitious club to enhance his chances of doing so and Liverpool’s Champions League status clearly trumps the London pair.

The fact that Caulker made his one and only England appearance while playing for Brendan Rodgers at Swansea in 2012 only adds to the chances of the Reds making a deal possible.

Rodgers’ side are 9/1 to go one step further than the second place they achieved last term and have been on a trolley-dash exercise this summer to try and achieve it.

Should they land a centre-half, be it Lovren or Caulker, it would be the fourth player to sign for the club this window, with deals for Divock Origi and Lazar Markovic expected to go through imminently.
