Commonwealth Games: The ‘Battle of the Brownlees’ bet to be on
Published:When Jonathan Brownlee crossed the line to take the Bronze Medal in the Triathlon at London 2012, despite picking up a 15-second penalty for mounting his bike too early, he could be forgiven for feeling a little less brotherly love than, for example, the city of Philadelphia.
Not for the first time in the 24-year-old’s athletics career, older sibling Alistair had already grabbed Gold by coming home half-a-minute ahead of his baby brother, with Spaniard Javier Gomez splitting the pair in second.
That was the second podium in three summers the Brownlee boys hogged, after Alistair forced Jonathan into Silver at the climax of the 2011 ITU World Championship Series, when the 26-year-old proved his dominance by taking four of the six stages.
The younger of the Yorkshire-born duo has had some sprint success over the 1/3 jolly to land Commonwealth Triathlon Gold and matched his brother for stage wins in last year’s ITU series.
Bar another penalty, he’s sure to get closer than two years ago, but it will take a curiously brave punter to steam into the 3/1 odds on Jonathan taking Brownlee bragging rights by winning in Glasgow, having considered Alistair’s ability to ready himself for the big occasion.
Gomez is out of the reckoning for this event, so the Brownlees look to have it between them, with South African Richard Murray – who finished 17th in London – rated the best bet of the rest by Ladbrokes.com at 10/1.
On all known form, the 25-year-old won’t have enough in the tank to take on the Olympic medalists, while it’s 16/1 bar the top trio in Scotland.
