Liverpool finally get it right by hijacking Man Utd’s Vidal bid

| 24.07.2014

Liverpool have kissed goodbye to a megastar this summer, but rather than trying to replace Luis Suarez with an absolute worldy they’re in danger of flooding the squad with comparatively mediocre players.

Therefore it should be music to the ears of Reds fans that Liverpool are reportedly looking to use the pull of Champions League football to gazump bitter rivals Manchester United to signing Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.

One of Chile’s stand-out performers at the World Cup alongside Arsenal new boy Alexis Sanchez, United have identified Vidal as their principle transfer target since the end of the tournament.

The Metro report that the Red Devils have already lodged a megabucks bid of £42.5m for Vidal’s services, which Liverpool are now prepared to match to the penny.

It’s a bold, but correct move from Brendan Rodgers who has so far brought four players to Anfield who are nowhere near the level of the man they’ve begrudgingly sold on to Barcelona.

Having performed admirably for Southampton last season, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana should prove to be decent acquisitions in Premier League terms, though neither has any Champions League experience.

Meanwhile, midfielder Emre Can and wide-forward Lazar Markovic both experienced top European football for only the first time last season, for Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica respectively.

At just 20-years-old the duo certainly have potential, but are nowhere near Vidal’s level yet.

Vidal is the polished article at 27 and in his pomp having just scooped the third Serie A title in a row since joining Juve.

If Liverpool could swipe him from under United’s nose, it would not only give them a huge boost and damage their rivals ambitions, but it would seriously improve their own chances of going one better than last season in the title race.

The Merseysider’s 9/1 odds to win the Premier League would be sure to reduce if they could pin Vidal down and given they can offer Champions League, there’s every chance.
