Man Utd win while Liverpool lose in our summer transfer rankings

When it comes to the summer transfer window, some clubs like to ping the lids like a greyhound at Wimbledon and get their business completed early, while others take the tortoise approach to the race.

With around a month to go before the start of the season, here’s how the teams’ business shapes up so far:

Winning – Arsenal, Chelsea, Hull, Man Utd, Newcastle, Southampton, West Ham

Arsenal have fixed the hole that saw their star players drip out of the club each window, while starting to top up their quota by adding Alexis Sanchez’s capture to last year’s Mesut Ozil snaffle.

Chelsea should be very confident of winning the Premier League at 15/8 having nabbed Cesc Fabregas, Filipe Luis and Diego Costa, while Man Utd’s rebuild has strong early foundations in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera.

Away from the title race, Steve Bruce is collecting an impressive set of players having bought Robert Snodgrass, Jake Livermore and Tom Ince. West Ham are spending big on exciting talent, Newcastle are quietly changing their reputation as transfer failures and Southampton are successfully holding Liverpool to ransom.

Treading Water – Aston Villa, Everton, Leicester, Man City, QPR, Stoke, Swansea, Tottenham, West Brom

This set of fence sitters either haven’t bought anyone of note (Crystal Palace, Everton, QPR, Spurs) or have been busy working away on both their ins and outs column but are yet to either improve or diminish the quality of the squad.

Losing – Burnley, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Sunderland

Like a lottery winner spending £25 on a J-cloth, Liverpool have been overpaying for their summer acquisitions with gay abandon.

None of their signings so far (Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Emre Can and Rickie Lambert) look to be of the quality they need to progress and without Luiz Suarez, they could struggle this season.

Burnley, Palace and Sunderland all need to replace their numerous outgoings before they can move up a level in this list.
