Spurs among three clubs who shouldn’t overlook forgotten striker
Given the exploits of Colombia’s Golden Boot winner at the World Cup and subsequent interest from Real Madrid for James Rodriguez’s services, it’s been quite easy to forget all about other Los Cafeteros stars.
However, there are several Premier League clubs who would do well to remember that prolific Porto striker Jackson Martinez is still angling for a move to these shores – after notching twice for Colombia in a 4-2 win over Japan in Brazil.
Liverpool – 9/1 for the title
Signing boyhood Reds fan Rickie Lambert may have been a decent bit of business for £4m, especially given that the former Saints striker has contributed 15, then 13 league goals in his previous top-flight campaigns.
However, the 32-year-old was always going to be a supplement to the lethal SAS partnership of last season at Anfield and now Luis Suarez has left, another striker of high quality is required.
Tottenham – 66/1 for the title
Having squeezed just six Premier League goals out of expensive Valencia recruit Roberto Soldado last season, it’s clear there is room for a more prolific goal grabber at White Hart Lane.
Martinez is nothing if not prolific, plundering 60 goals in just 91 games from his time with Porto.
The 27-year-old is also much quicker than any of the other striking options available to new boss Mauricio Pochettino and could add a much-needed striking dimension at White Hart Lane.
Arsenal – 13/2 for the title
Just because the Gunners have netted themselves another landmark signing in the shape of Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez, they needn’t tie up the purse strings there.
As fine an addition as Sanchez will surely prove to be, he’s not the out-and-out predator in front of goal that Arsenal have been craving since Robin van Persie bailed.
Martinez would be the perfect foil for the more cumbersome Olivier Giroud.
