Toro Rosso rookie a top bet to make 4th-straight Q3 in Hungary
Published:Hungary represents the last race in the calendar before Formula One follows the education system’s lead and breaks up for the summer, but there’s nothing schoolboy about the qualifying performances of Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat this term.
The 20-year-old Russian, promoted to the Toro Rosso team to replace the upwardly-mobile Daniel Ricciardo, has been nothing short of sensational for the Red Bull second string during his debut season in F1.
Kyvat made it into Q3 in his very first Grand Prix in Australia, where he backed up that performance by scoring his first pair of F1 points behind teammate Jean-Eric Vergne.
Unfortunately, reliability issues have cost Kvyat dear in recent races, though his qualifying displays have remained right out of the top draw considering his inexperience.
It’s now three consecutive races where Kvyat has been seen slugging it out in the final qualifying session and for that reason the 5/6 about him following suit in Hungary represents very low-hanging fruit indeed.
The 2013 GP3 Series drivers’ champion finished barely two hundredths of second behind double world champion Fernando Alonso in Germany, to secure a position on the fourth row of the grid alongside the Spaniard at Hockenheim.
Red Bull have clearly signed up a star of the not-so-distant future in the form of Kvyat, whose progress in motor sport’s most glamorous pursuit looks destined for grand things.
Outside of the Russian’s chances, but still in search of value, his teammate Vergne at 1/1 also appeals greatly.
Meanwhile, Force India’s gung-ho Mexican Sergio Perez – whose made three of the last five Q3’s – is certainly worth a poke at 8/11.
