Arsenal waiting to pounce in race for PSG star Cavani

Published:

It was widely reported after the Community Shield that Arsene Wenger would conclude Arsenal’s summer business by signing a centre back to replace Thomas Vermaelen but could the Frenchman be about to open his piggy bank further before the transfer window slams shut?

Rumours are surfacing about the possibility of Arsenal strengthening their attacking options even further with the acquisition of PSG star Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan is thought to be unhappy at playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Paris and is open to a switch to England, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool also thought to be monitoring the situation.

And with Les Parisiens keen on luring Angel Di Maria to the Parc des Princes, Wenger could be waiting for the pieces of the puzzle to fall into place once again before launching an astonishing £50m bid for the former Napoli man.

Last summer the Arsenal boss waited until Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid was completed before snaring Mesut Ozil from the Bernabeu and this summer he pulled of the same trick with Alexis Sanchez.

As Barcelona were tying up a deal for Luis Suarez Wenger was in negotiations with the Catalan club for the Chilean superstar beating both Manchester United and Liverpool to his signature.

Watch 10 of the best goals Edinson Cavani has scored during his career so far:

PSG’s deal to sign Di Maria collapsed last week because of restrictions regarding financial fair play at the Ligue 1 club but if any deal is resurrected Wenger will be ready to pounce with PSG looking to offload a high earner from the wage bill.

Any potential move for Cavani, who fired 16 goals as PSG won the French title at a canter last season, would surely increase the optimism amongst Arsenal fans ahead of the new season even further with their club crying out for a superstar striker to challenge Olivier Giroud.

The 27-year-old is certainly that after firing 95 goals in 116 appearances for Napoli before netting 22 times for PSG in all competitions last season and his arrival would certainly shorten Arsenal’s title odds.

The north London club are 13/2 with Ladbrokes to win the Premier League title but any more significant moves in the transfer market could see that price slashed with Cavani, Sami Khedira, William Carvalho, Marco Reus, Bendikt Howedes and Kostas Manolas all linked with an Emirates switch in recent weeks.
