Cantona hat-trick ranks best of top 5 past Community Shields

The competition so good they named it twice is almost upon us. Formerly the Charity and now the Community Shield, the English top-flights annual curtain raiser at Wembley is an absolute staple of the footballing calendar and weve dug out five of our favourites from the annals.

1974 Liverpool 1-1 Leeds (Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties)

This game was eventful for more than one reason, but it is most remembered for fisticuffs between Liverpools Kevin Keegan and Leeds Billy Bremner which resulted in red cards and hefty fines for both. Then there was Leeds goalkeeper David Harveys sudden death penalty which hit the bar, allowing the Reds to win out.

1992 Leeds 4-3 Liverpool

The pick of the bunch features the Premier Leagues original French footballing genius at his best, bagging a hat-trick in a ding-dong battle with Ian Rush and co.

1998 Arsenal 3-0 Manchester United

After securing Arsene Wengers first Premier League title following a race which went to the wire with Manchester United only a point separated the sides Arsenal wasted no time striking the first blow of the next season.

2005 Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal 1

This was simply the Didier Drogba show at the Millenuium Stadium. The first two goals of the Drogba v Arsenal video compilation above are in this game as the Ivorian, in his pomp, proved too-hot to handle for poor old Philippe Senderos who was left chasing the Chelsea mans sizeable shadow.

2011 Manchester United 3-2 Manchester City

Who says these games dont matter? Having secured the FA Cup under Roberto Mancini it was clear the newly moneyed noisy neighbours were on the up, but Sir Alex Fergusons side had other ideas as Nanis 90+4 minute winner sent a message.
