In case McIlroy falters back Rose for Top European at PGA C’Ship

| 05.08.2014

He’s rightly the favourite to top the leaderboard come Sunday at Valhalla, but if for any reason Rory McIlroy cant keep his amazing run going at the PGA Championship there’s a few tasty-looking picks to be top European.

Justin Rose couldn’t manage the hat-trick of tournament wins as he headed to The Open Championship – a feat McIlroy is looking to master – but another good showing at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational bodes very well for the final major of the season.

The Englishman is enjoying a scorching summer where he just added a tied-fourth place at the Bridgestone Invitational to the Quicken Loans and Scottish Open triumphs.

At 13/2 behind the world number one, to be Europe’s highest-placed representative after 72 holes, Rose’s case gains extra credence from the fact the last two PGA winners ranked inside the top five at the Bridgestone.

Rose ranks sixth in the PGA Tour’s all-around ranking which is a sure sign that the 2012 US Open champion is a golfer in full control of his game right now.

Naturally, McIlory’s closest competitor in the last two events is afforded the same odds.

On a cautionary note, though, Sergio Garcias propensity to undo stellar work in one round with an erratic day somewhere over the four, is a glaring Achilles Heel to be wary of.

Meanwhile, 10/1-shot Henrik Stenson has kept it consistently inside the top 20 this season, turning in five top fives as well, but somewhere the awe-inspiring golf of 2013 has gone awry.

However, after Rose, the two men set at 14/1 hold the most appeal in the value stakes. On his day, as was the case with his imperious US Open triumph this yearm, former world number one Martin Kaymer is capable of McIlroy-esque dominance.

At the same odds is Graeme McDowell, who’s T8 at Firestone was his fifth-consecutive top 10, making the Northern Irishman one of the form golfers in the field.
