The Rams came within a whisker of the Premier League last season and are many people’s favourites for promotion from the Championship this term, while Carlisle are likely set for a mid-table finish in League Two.
Steve McLaren’s side started the season with a 1-0 win over Rotherham at Pride Park, while the Cumbrians lost at home to Luton Town, who were promoted from the Conference last season.
Derby lost just once during an impressive pre-season, and that was to Zenit St. Petersburg, and they should stroll past their first-round opponents without too much fuss.

A feature of both Carlisle and Derby’s pre-seasons was a lack of goals, with each of the Rams final three friendlies and four of the Cumbrians’ last five seeing less than three strikes.
That trend continued into competitive football, with just one goal in each of their matches on opening days, Derby triumphing 1-0 while Carlisle lost by the same scoreline.
Graham Kavanagh will likely set his team up to frustrate their visitors and with Derby yet to hit top gear, it is unlikely to be a goalfest despite the gap in quality between the two sides.
Chris Martin to score the first goal @ 4/1
The 25-year-old striker scored 25 goals for Derby in all competitions last season, and took a particular fancy to the Capital One Cup, notching three in three games.
Martin bagged the opener in Derby’s final two games in the competition, and is the most likely man to find the scoresheet first at Brunton Park.
Although Martin didn’t score against Rotherham, his pre-season form was demonstrated by the two goals he notched in Derby’s 2-0 win over Rangers in their final friendly.
