Everybody’s talking about … Sturridge the Liverpool saviour

The old cliché of cometh the hour, cometh the man never rang truer than when, with 11 minutes to go, Daniel Sturridge duly arrived with a goal to help Liverpool to a crucial 2-1 win over Southampton at Anfield.

Reds fans may still be sceptical about Liverpool’s title chances, with the Merseysiders 10/1 to win the Premier League with Ladbrokes, following the departure of Luis Suarez but the England striker looks set to continue the scoring form that helped the club enjoy a great start to last season.

Sturridge enjoyed an electric start to the 2013/14 campaign, scoring four goals in three competitive games for Liverpool in a tally that helped him earn the Premier League Player of the Month Award for August.

He went on to score crucial goals against Manchester United, Swansea City and Sunderland before setting a new Reds record following a brace of goals in the return fixture against the Swans that meant he netted in eight consecutive league games for Liverpool.

Very much a player that relies on momentum, even if the Merseysiders do fall away in the title race, Sturridge could be the one to watch in the scoring charts and is 5/1 to lead the way come the end of the season.

Ulloa’s Flying Foxes Start at Everton

Another player off to a flyer in the Premier League is Leonardo Ulloa with the Argentine netting on his Leicester City debut in the top-flight against an Everton team with aspirations of Champions League football.

Scoring with what can only be described as a poacher’s goal, Ulloa still has some way to go before he can justify the £7m the Foxes spent on the former Brighton man but this is certainly a great start with that 2-2 draw pushing Leicester out to 9/4 for the drop.

The Long road home for Southampton

Liverpool’s opponents, Southampton remain dark horses for the drop, with Robbie Savage among those to tip the Saints for a return to the Championship alongside Aston Villa.

But while the Villans impressed in a 1-0 win away at Stoke, Southampton suffered a 2-1 defeat made all the more agonising by a late miss from £12m signing Shane Long.

Still a distant 9/2 for the drop, if the former Reading, West Brom and Hull hitman continues to misfire, then that price could well be worth backing.
