F1 summer shakedown: Strong case made for Rosberg to claim title

Eight races stand between either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg being crowned Formula One’s drivers’ world champion, barring the introduction of staggered starts in the second half of the season.

Even then, this all-conquering Mercedes machine could probably still reel in a Sauber or two with a 10-lap handicap.

Not that this enthralling season has been dull for a single minute, but the phrase two-horse race maybe on for a record number of appearances during 2014 – such has been the Mercedes duo’s dominance.

Rosberg and Hamilton have accounted for nine of the eleven Grand Prix victories, while only Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull – with two wins – has managed to occupy the highest step of the podium.

As it stands during the summer recess it’s Rosberg who has forged a handy 11-point advantage over his British colleague, despite taking one less chequered flag.

Yet despite his lead, it’s still Hamilton who is favourite for the title he last won in 2008 at 8/11, while Rosberg is just in his wing mirrors at a far more attractive price of 11/10.

And as we’ve continually pointed out on this site, therein the German continues to offer the best value and that is fully backed up by a look back at the teammates’ performances post-break last season.

Although the Russian Grand Prix is fresh on the schedule this year, seven of the eight races left in 2014 were present on last year’s calendar and it’s Rosberg who comes out on top.

At those seven circuits still to house races this season, Rosberg clocked up 65 point to Hamilton’s 47 at Belgium, Italy, Singapore, Japan, Abu Dhabi, United States and Brazil.

It’s time to bet with your head rather than your heart on this one.
