Why Spurs should go all out to sign this Man Utd forward
Published:Considering they currently sit top of the Premier League, and have just stuck a hatful past QPR, Tottenham Hotspur fans might be well satisfied with their attacking options for once.
Emmanuel Adebayor’s often leaky motivation tank is apparently still full and the Togolese striker is ably-supported by a midfield including the rejuvenated Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli.
Thus the news that Spurs were in the hunt for Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, apparently keen to leave due to a lack of playing time, seemed a but puzzling.
The head-scratching will have continued at the 23-year-old’s rumoured price-tag of £15m, a hefty fee for a player who has never scored 10 league goals in a season.
However, it is important not to get the wrong impression of either Welbeck or Spurs’ attack, as one is hugely underrated and the other hideously inconsistent.
The Man Utd forward might have scored just nine Premier League goals last term, but it’s important to remember how little time he actually spent on the pitch.
Welbeck actually averaged a very decent 0.55 goals-per-90-minutes, a figure that matches that produced by both Adebayor and Romelu Lukaku, and converted an impressive 25 per cent of his chances.
The 23-year-old also spent plenty of time playing on the flanks of United’s attack, a role he could take up again at Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino, who used Jay Rodriguez in similar fashion at Southampton.
In the Argentine’s 4-2-3-1 system, it’s important that the wide forwards produce plenty of goals, and although Chadli notched a brace against QPR, you would back Welbeck to score more than the Belgian across a full season.
Meanwhile it’s hard to get too carried away with the form of Lamela just yet, and Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane are both risky options to lead the Spurs line.
Looking further forward, the England international would also be a fine replacement for Adebayor whenever the Togo international next falls out of favour at Spurs.
Welbeck is no doubt aiming to eventually take up a central role somewhere, and whoever takes a gamble on him could reap dividends in the same manner that Liverpool did when they pushed Daniel Sturridge into the limelight.
