Spurs target shows his class with brace as Eredivisie kicks off

| 11.08.2014

Although the rest of Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer summer is likely to be focussed on trying to force through moves for Mateo Musacchio and Morgan Schneiderlin, links to PSV Eindhoven’s Memphis Depay won’t go away.

The 20-year-old did a good job of keeping himself in the headlines in PSV’s Eredivisie opener, scoring twice in a man-of-the-match display against Willem II.

Depay also created two chances and completed two dribbles, extending the form he showed in Brazil with the Netherlands, where he registered two goals and one assist in four appearances.

Spurs have focussed their cash on improving their defence this summer, an understandable approach after the shellackings they received last term, but could need a little extra firepower to have any chance of a top-four spot.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are 7/2 to finish in the Champions League places in his first season in charge, but profligate finishing from all three of their strikers in their final friendly against Schalke demonstrated what could be a major problem for the Lilywhites.

Spurs created the fourth-most chances in the Premier League last term with 439, but scored the seventh-most goals with 55, with Roberto Soldado especially culpable for the shortfall.

Pochettino will need his wide players to chip in with plenty of goals to help out his unreliable strikers, and Depay could be exactly the man for the job.

The Dutch flyer scored 12 goals in 32 Eredivisie games last year, as well as contributing seven assists.

Add in his excellent dribbling – he completed 101 take ons – and the 2.7 key passes per game he averaged, and could prove a snip even at around £16m.

Still only 20, another big season in the Netherlands could see that price rocket and if Spurs are keen to sign him before Europe’s elite clubs become interested, they would be wise not to let him play another game for PSV.
