Swansea v Burnley: Hosts to follow Chelsea’s three-goal lead

Published:

In case further proof was needed that football is bonkers, a comparative look at the first Premier League game of this and last season shows that Garry Monk is a better manager than Michael Laudrup, while David Moyes is more superior than Louis van Gaal.

Having succeeded where the Dane failed, by beating Manchester United in the season’s champagne breaker, Monk takes on a Burnley side who received a predictably tough reintroduction to top-flight life against Chelsea next.

Here are our best three bets for the encounter:

Swansea to win – 4/6

In their three home games against the promoted sides last season Swansea went undefeated, winning once and drawing the other two.

Their home form against teams from the bottom half of the table (which Burnley undoubtedly will be) was encouraging too, only losing once and beating six of the nine competitors.

Swansea to score 2-3 goals – 23/20

While shipping three goals to Chelsea wouldn’t be too shameful for most of the top-flight this season, Burnley’s defensive stock looks as tatty as a Primark sale.

Their only previous stint in the Premier League saw the Clarets struggle on the road, winning just two games in all competitions and conceding two or more goals a staggering 15 times.

With a lack of experienced top-flight defenders to call upon this season, suffering from travel sickness again seems likely for Sean Dyche’s side.

Gylfi Sigurdsson to score at anytime – 11/5

The Icelandic midfielder settled back into his role as Swansea’s lynchpin rather quickly at Old Trafford, notching the winner after 72 minutes.

In 19 league outings for the south Wales club, Sigurdsson has now scored eight goals and his price to bag at anytime against weaker opposition can’t be ignored.
