Capital One Cup: Meet Liverpool’s latest ‘Gerrard replacement’
Scoring on your first-team debut is a dream every footballer harbours and for 17-year-old Liverpool midfielder Jordan Rossiter, that reverie became reality in the Capital One Cup against Middlesbrough.
The local lad was the surprise inclusion in the heart of Liverpool’s midfield and with just ten minutes on the Anfield clock, Rossiter remained cool as a cucumber, pouncing on some calamitous Boro defending to slot home from 25 yards.
Liverpool finally went through to the next round after an absolutely epic 14-13 win on penalties which saw both goalkeepers beat each other from 12 yards.
The Reds are now 9/2 shots to win the League Cup following a night, which saw Arsenal dumped out courtesy of Southampton’s 2-1 win at the Emirates.
But what of the Kop’s new hero, who became the second youngest scorer in the club’s history, behind a certain striker named Michael Owen?
Given his favoured central midfield role, comparisons with Steven Gerrard are sure to surface for the player picked up by Liverpool’s academy at the age of just six.
He has captained Liverpool’s U16s and U18s and has tenacity and ability in equal measures which bodes well for his future Anfield career.
Club legend Jamie Carragher is clearly impressed with the Kop’s new darling, who he knows all about from his own playing days.
“I like the look of him (Rossiter). He’s got a bit of character and steel that me and Stevie had – When he was 15 he was playing for the U18s, which is a tremendous accolade for the lad. He’s a great talent,” said Carragher.
It’s going to be intriguing to see when Brendan Rodgers next sees fit to blood his emerging star.
