KLM Open: Dyson’s love affair with Kennemer marks him out

Published:

Certain courses and events suit certain golfers and there probably aren’t many better examples on the European Tour than the marriage between the KLM Open and Simon Dyson.

Amazingly, three of Dyson’s six European Tour wins have arrived at the Dutch event which has been hosted in various guises annually since 1972, mainly shared between three courses.

The 2014 edition again returns to Kennemer G&CC and it’s here where 20/1 shot Dyson has collected two of three KLM titles, in 2009 and 2006.

In fact the Englishman’s last five finishes over the Par 72 layout in the Dutch seaside town of Zandvoort read 3, 1 ,12, 27 and 1.

Add to that hugely impressive run down that Dyson squeezed in another KLM triumph over at the Hilversumsche Golf Course two years ago, then a bet at these odds appears foolish to ignore, especially as the York native comes off a seventh place on his last start in Italy.

A fourth Dyson win would set a precedent of most victories at this event, while he’d also become only the seventh player in history to win the same European Tour tournament four times.

Meanwhile, another man vying to enter the record books, is defending champion Joost Luiten, the 10/1 favourite with Ladbrokes.

Currently seventh in the Race To Dubai rankings and arriving in his native land off a fourth at the Italian Open – his best result in eight outings – Luiten would become the first Dutchman to successfully defend a European Tour title.

Keep an eye on in-form Shane Lowry at 20/1 also, as the Irishman is in very tidy nick ahead of this event where he’s posted four top 15 finishes, including a pair of top 10s in his last five European Tour outings.

Furthermore, only a sloppy 75 following three sub 70 rounds at Kennemer last season kept Lowry off the final day’s leaderboard where he ended up 26th.
