Liverpool lining up Barcelona stopper as Reina replacement
Published:Following Liverpool’s comprehensive 3-0 win over Tottenham Brendan Rodgers insisted transfer deadline day would see far more action in the way of exits rather than further arrivals, but a new goalkeeper could buck that trend.
Barcelona’s long-term stopper Victor Valdes, 32, has been out of action since March while he recovers from knee surgery and is a free agent having been released.
The situation over in Spain has not gone unnoticed by Liverpool who are in the market for a quality back-up option to Simon Mignolet after Pepe Reina left to join Bayern Munich earlier in the window.
Although Reina was on loan at Napoli last season, the Reds’ lack of involvement in European competition placated the need for another distinguished stopper.
However, with the Champions League back on the agenda – where Liverpool are 7/2-shots to win Group B containing tournament favourites Real Madrid – there is an obvious hole to be filled.
Being one of the most experienced keepers in the competition’s history, Valdes would clearly offer a huge amount to the cause.
