Man Utd cut for top-four, QPR eased for drop post-deadline
Published:Now that the high-pitched excitement of summer transfer deadline day has quietened to a barely-audible murmur, we’ve taken a look at the market movers and shakers in the Premier League outrights.
The noisy fellows up north making all the headlines have been nibbled at for a 2015/16 Champions League return, while there are plenty of price swings further down Europe’s most competitive top flight.
Moving up
Manchester United were cut from 8/11 over the weekend, when they failed to win for the fourth time in as many competitive matches under new gaffer Louis van Gaal, into 4/5 to regain the Premier League top-four status they lost for the first time in 22 seasons last term.
The last time United gained just two points from their first three fixtures of a top-flight campaign was in 1992/93, when they won the inaugural Premier League title, although few people are suggesting a repeat of that triumph is on the cards at indicative 16/1 odds.
Meanwhile, QPR had a few decimal points added to their relegation price after a typically canny deadline day from coach Harry Redknapp, with the west Londoners now 6/4 from 11/8 for the drop.
Redknapp added former charges Sandro and Niko Kranjcar to a squad that already looked quite capable of staying up, although failing to land Fabio Borini heaps plenty of pressure on R’s striker Charlie Austin now Loic Remy has high-tailed it to Chelsea.
Going down
West Brom did not add to their 11 summer signings, none of which have been particularly stellar, on deadline day and are now second-favourites ahead of the Super Hoops to be playing Championship football next season at 11/8, from 7/5.
The captures of experienced Premier League trio Kevin Doyle, Zeki Fryers and James McCarthur, the Scottish international brought in for a club record £7m from Wigan, couldn’t stop Crystal Palace’s relegation odds sliding from 8/5 into 13/8 either.
No change
Despite signing a striker, any striker in the form of Man Utd youth product Danny Welbeck, Arsenal were unmoved at 12/1 to win the Premier League for the first time in over a decade this May.
It may be wise to get on this double-digit offering now, as the Gunners host seemingly-unready Premier League champions Manchester City next before winnable games away to Aston Villa and at home against Southampton and Tottenham, who Arsene Wenger always seems to get the better of.
Welbeck may be known as a poor finisher, but his per-90-minute goal stats where actually better than injured Arsenal striker’s Olivier Giroud’s during Premier League 2013/14, according to Squawka.com.
