Meet the Serie A outcast on Tottenham and Newcastle’s radar

Newcastle United’s pursuit of goalscoring reinforcements could see the club go head-to-head with Tottenham Hotspur to acquire free agent Innocent Emeghara.

The Magpies are on the lookout for another forward after Siem de Jong was ruled out until the New Year though injury and have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old Emeghara, who is available on a free after previous employers Siena went into liquidation.

Born in Lagos Nigeria, Emeghara has represented Switzerland nine times at international level, having moved to the country at the age of 13.

A prolific goalscorer during his younger days with Winterthur and Grasshoppers, the striker has also thrived during spells with Lorient in Ligue 1 and both Livorno and Siena in Serie A.

He could prove to be a bargain purchase for a Newcastle side that has so far failed to find the net in two of their three Premier League fixtures played so far this term.

But the Toon could face competition to complete deal for Emeghara, with Tottenham among a host of Premier League sides linked with moves for the forward.

The Lilywhites are eager to add another forward to their ranks, with Emmanuel Adebayor, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado currently the club’s only recognised strikers.

Spurs had been linked with move for Jonas – the ex-Valencia striker who was released by the Spanish club over the summer – but with the Brazilian edging closer to signing a deal with Benfica, Emeghara could represent a viable alternative.

Sunderland are also thought to be weighing up a move for the free agent, while West Ham United  have also been linked with the Swiss star.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, are thought to be considering the offer of a contract to the Nigeria-born forward, after Giuseppe Rossi suffered yet another injury setback for the Viola.
