Yet more ODI punishment heading England’s way at Headingley

Published:

After 100 more overs of suffering at Headingley the ODI series will be over and English limited-over cricket can be shoved to the back of the cupboard to be forgotten about.

At least it would be if it wasn’t a World Cup year, with the media and fans baying for the blood of the skipper and management.

It should be that a new, vibrant methodology is unveiled to get the monkey off Alastair Cook’s back, but that won’t happen and the same team playing the same style will disappoint again.

Here’s our best bets for what might as well be a gimme for MS Dhoni’s side:

India to win – 8/13

How long ago do the three humiliations England subjected the tourists to in the Test series seem? Now well-and-truly nestled into the groove of their favourite format, the Indians are a formidable outfit currently.

MS Dhoni became the country’s most successful ODI captain with the last victory and their isn’t a shred of reasoning why Ladbrokes customers shouldn’t back him to extend the lead here.

Century to be scored in the match – 1/1

Unless Moeen Ali is bumped higher up the order in Ian Bell’s absence, this bet basically relies on one of the tourists tonning up, as the spinning all-rounder’s 67 last time out is England’s top score in the series.

Luckily, the Indian top order has been flailing the bowling to all parts, with two of their party – Suresh Raina and Akinkya Rahane – reaching three figures so far.

Shikhar Dhawan registered 97* at Edgbaston too, so there’s reason for confidence of another milestone.

Ravindra Jadeja top Indian wicket taker – 3/1

R Ashwin may be the Hollywood name in India’s spinning supplies, but it’s actually Jadeja who does all the hard work.

The man nicknamed “Rockstar” by former IPL teammate Shane Warne is the leading Indian wicket taker in the series with seven scalps and is a plump price to lead the way in Leeds.
