QPR line up £6.6m bid for Defoe as part of Redknapp reunion
Published:Jermain Defoe could be set for a sensational return to the Premier League with Queens Park Rangers, after it emerged that the London club was lining up a late bid for the striker.
The 31-year-old is thought to be considering his position at MLS side Toronto FC following the dismissal of manager and friend Ryan Nelsen over the weekend.
Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko subsequently confirmed that the former Tottenham and West Ham striker had been the subject of several bids from abroad.
“We have received multiple offers for Jermain Defoe and we will make a decision on this in the next 24 hours,” he told reporters.
The MLS club has reportedly valued the striker at around £6.6m and rumours are beginning to circulate suggesting Defoe has already arrived in London ahead of a potential move.
QPR currently lead the way for the former England hitman, with Defoe enjoying success spells at Spurs, West Ham and Portsmouth under Rs boss Harry Redknapp.
The only potential stumbling block to any deal could be the striker’s £90,000-a-week wages, which are thought to be a concern to the Loftus Road club.
But with Defoe boasting a consistent record in front of goal over the years in the Premier League, Rangers may be willing to take a risk on the forward, with the club keen to plug the gaps left by the departure of Loic Remy to Chelsea.
Defoe may not be the only familiar face to be heading to Loftus Road today, with another Tottenham star, Sandro, linked with a Redknapp reunion, while Aaron Lennon is also closing in on a move to the club.
The Brazilian appears on his way out of White Hart Lane, having already been linked with a move to Serie A side Napoli earlier in the summer.
Defoe’s likely departure from Toronto will bring the curtain down on a short but prolific spell in the US, during which the 31-year-old netted 11 times in 16 appearances for the MLS franchise.
