Spurs ready to give up on England international to get another

So far this transfer window, Mauricio Pochettino has resisted the urge to return to Southampton to do any business but it seems his reluctance will end on deadline day as he attempts to prise Jay Rodriguez away from St Mary’s.

After selling what seemed like almost their entire first-team squad to Liverpool at the start of the summer, Southampton have since been staunch in their refusal to let any other players leave.

With so little time to find replacements on deadline day that approach is admirable, but Spurs could find a way around it.

The Lilywhites are reportedly keen to offer winger Andros Townsend, who the Saints bid £10m for last month, as a make-weight to nab the one-cap forward.

A part of the forward line that essentially landed Pochettino the Spurs job, Rodriguez would fit perfectly into the philosophy his former manager is implementing at White Hart Lane.
