Switzerland v England: A clean sweep of Swiss bets recommended
As is the English way, Roy Hodgson’s side were ridiculed in the aftermath of their recent friendly with Norway despite winning 1-0.
Accused of pulling the wool over the country’s eyes by selecting young players, only to send them onto the field to play a slow, boring brand of football, Hodgson begins the qualification for Euro 2016 against a country he knows well.
Having managed Switzerland in the early part of his career, the England boss must now topple them convincingly if he’s to end the negative chatter. But will a Three Lions win be among our best bets for the match?
Since the back end of 2010, only two teams – Argentina and Romania – have travelled to battle the Swiss and returned home victorious.
Clearly a tough team to beat in front of their own fans, the Romanian loss was their last at home way back in 2012,
England will struggle to break down what is an organised unit without one of their two bright attacking sparks. Daniel Sturridge misses the game through injury.
Not only were the Romanians the last team to defeat Switzerland on their own soil, but they were also the last team to stop them scoring.
That’s a run of nine straight matches where La Nati have managed to slot past the opposition keeper and with England not a solid defensive unit, there should be no trouble in stretching that streak to 10.
Considering the hosts’ specialty for notching on home turf, this is a very good price.
In all of their last four internationals the Swiss have found the back of the net in the 80th minute or later, showing that ability to score late is potent.
If England sit back, like Hodgson has intimated, then the Swiss’ love of a late goal could be the decisive factor here.
