United still hoping to beat deadline in De Jong swoop

Manchester United are still hoping to land AC Milan enforcer Nigel de Jong in a deadline busting move.

The Red Devils have confirmed the signing of De Jong’s international team mate Daley Blind from Ajax but remain keen on boosting their midfield ranks further.

United have provided the biggest  transfer deadline day shock so far after agreeing a loan deal from Radamel Falcao and while the Colombian hitman has grabbed the headlines United have been quietly keeping tabs on the De Jong deal.

Any move for the Milan star is likely to be dependent in shifting Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley from the growing wage bill but United chiefs remain hopeful that all the relevant deals can be completed in time.

Should United add De Jong to the signings of Blind and Falcao Van Gaal’s squad – which will also include Luke Shaw, Marcus Rojo, Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera – will start to look a lot more capable of winning the league – a feat currently priced at 16/1.

The Old Trafford outfit still appear to be a little light at the heart of defence but Van Gaal’s faith in the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans could pay off if the attacking purchases click.

Liverpool, who conceded 50 goals last year, showed that a potent attack can see you mix it with the big boys regardless of what happens at the back.

January reinforcements could still be on LVG’s agenda but with the embarrassment of attacking riches now at his disposal United should be able to compete until the window reopens!
