66/1 that Spurs star’s rabona is matched this weekend

If Erik Lamela is particularly famous in Britain, it’s for the wrong reasons.

After making a move to Tottenham for a club-record fee the Argentine failed to impress in his nine league appearances last season during an injury-ravaged campaign.

Small steps of progress were being made this season, as the former Roma man was regularly picked in Mauricio Pochettino’s lineups.

Then he did this against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League last time out and his confidence soared, ending the night with a brace in an impressive outing:

The outrageous effort, that is usually reserved for crosses rather than shots, curled in from outside the box and left teammates and fans speechless in wonderment.

In celebration of the 22-year-old’s audacity, Ladbrokes have jumped firmly on board the “rabona” bandwagon, going 66/1 that any Premier League player emulates Lamela’s goal during this weekend’s set of fixtures.

Alternatively, you can snap up 16/1 that the wonder-strike is recreated in the top flight at any point of the season.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “We’re sure plenty of players are brushing up on their rabonas on the training ground, but the betting suggests Lamela’s feat is unlikely to be matched this weekend or even this season.”

Some of the league’s more silky servants may well be eyeing the move, though one man who is perhaps surprisingly capable of “rabona-ing” is Lamela’s Lilywhites team-mate Jan Vertonghen, who almost chips into a bag using the now mainstream move.
