Aviva Premiership: The case for a Bath Grand Final victory

| 22.10.2014

Despite going down to a narrow defeat last time out at Wasps, Bath’s form has been the story of the Aviva Premiership so far in 2014/15, with the 5/1 about Mike Ford’s men winning their first Grand Final next May deserving of a decent punt.

The sleeping Somerset giants have kicked into another gear this term, after booking their place in the first ever Champions Cup in 2013/14, having missed out on the last two renewals of the now-defunct Heineken Cup.

A measure of Bath’s improvement can be taken from the fact that seven of their players have been called up by Stuart Lancaster for England’s upcoming autumn internationals, including uncapped winger Semesa Rokoduguni and Ford’s fly-half son George.

Fellow backs Kyle Eastmond and Jonathan Joseph have also been recalled into the Red Rose set up, alongside forwards David Wilson, Rob Webber and Dave Attwood, which gives an indication as to the strength of Bath’s pack at present.

Their great rivals Leicester could tell you a thing or two about coach Ford’s re-emerging force, after going down 45-0 at Bath’s Recreation Ground earlier this season, which was the Tigers’ first scoreless encounter in a decade.

Perennial Premiership favourites Saracens have also found the going too tough at the Rec, with Mark McCall’s men slumping to a 21-11 defeat there earlier this month.

Bath may have lost a couple on the road this term, with a 29-22 reverse at Wasps last time out shunting them down to fourth in the table, but their only other Premiership defeat so far in 2014/15 was away to champions Northampton, by the same slender converted-try margin.

That’s pretty solid form alongside the wins over Sarries and Leicester, and with all-comers leaving Somerset empty-handed so far in 2014/15, 5/1 on Bath’s return to the summit of English Rugby should be snapped up before they batter Newcastle at home in their next domestic fixture.
