Five Championship managers in line for Premier League posts
Published:Alan Pardew remains the runaway leader to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post, according to Ladbrokes – but who could be in line to potentially take over from the beleaguered Newcastle United boss?
The Championship certainly offers up plenty of potential Premier League managerial candidates and not just to those of the Toon persuasion with Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp also under noticeable pressure.
Here are Ladbrokes’ top five Premier League managerial candidates currently lingering in the English second-tier and the odds on them making a move up a division this term.
Stuart Gray – Sheffield Wednesday @ 14/1
Boasting some Premier League experience following a short stint at Southampton, Gray has proven himself a canny operator in the transfer market with the acquisitions of Stevie May and Sam Hutchinson both of whom have helped the Owls make a surprise bid for the play-offs.
Bob Peeters – Charlton Athletic @ 14/1
Unknown on these shores (unless you are a Millwall fan) prior to his arrival at the Valley, the 40-year-old Belgian has taken a team battling relegation last term and helped them make an unbeaten start in the Championship. A young and innovative coach with a potentially bright future in the game, he would relish the step up.
Aitor Karanka – Middlesbrough @ 12/1
Jose Mourinho’s former assistant manager at Real Madrid and a onetime Los Blancos star himself, Karanka could follow Brendan Rodgers and AVB in becoming the latest disciple of the Special One to be given an opportunity at a top job, having garnered praise for the style of play imposed at Boro.
Mick McCarthy – Ipswich Town @ 10/1
Dismissed by Wolves despite keeping the Molineux club in the Premier League the previous season their subsequent slide down to League One showed that maybe McCarthy was a better manager than given credit. Has plenty of experience and is working wonders for Ipswich at present.
Steve McClaren – Derby County @ 8/1
The red hot favourite to make a move upstairs, McClaren was 90 minutes away from taking Derby back to the big time but after an indifferent start to the season he could be tempted into making a move else, should the opportunity present it. Previously coached at QPR under Redknapp too.
