Gattuso great price for Rangers return despite Greek drama

Published:

In much the same way he was deemed a nutcase on the pitch during his playing career, Gennaro Gattuso has wasted no time in carving out a niche as one of the craziest managers currently plying his trade in European football.

And as a former Rangers player and fan favourite, the 36-year-old no doubt dreams of one day making an Ibrox return as manager of the Gers.

Available at 16/1 with Ladbrokes to be next Rangers manager, those odds may not be as outlandish as first thought, despite Gattuso’s recent u-turn concerning current club OFI Crete.

The Italian had looked set to be on the hunt for a new job after stepping down from his role as coach of the Greek club following a series of financial problems off the pitch and a 3-2 loss to Asteris Tripolis on it.

However the decision of several of OFI’s ‘ultra’ fans to camp outside Gattuso’s house until he changes his mind seems to have had the desired effect – even if it is a temporary stay of execution.

The Crete club’s precarious financial situation, coupled with the Italian’s tempestuous nature could make the reunion a short-lived one with Gattuso enjoying similarly short-lived but nevertheless explosive spells with FC Sion in Switzerland and Palermo in Italy.

For the time being at least Rangers manager Ally McCoist is going nowhere, but with things changing rapidly behind the scenes at Ibrox, the Scot could find himself on the way out or seeking an exit in the event of further upheaval at board level.

That scenario could clear the way for Gattuso to return, with the midfielder previously expressing a desire to play for the club just two years ago, and despite their precarious financial situation.

And should Rangers somehow fail to gain promotion this season then it would not be a shock to see the club at least consider the idea of bringing the firebrand Italian into the fold.
