Manchester City v Newcastle United: Silva to score best bet

Published:

West Ham’s 2-1 win over Manchester City will have given Alan Pardew plenty of encouragement ahead of Newcastle’s trip to the Etihad Stadium in the Capital One Cup but when it comes to assessing the Magpies chances of victory it’s all pretty black and white and not in a good way for the Toon.

City go into the game as the 3/10 favourites for victory at the Etihad, having dispatched Sheffield Wednesday 7-0 in the last round while Newcastle toiled to a 3-2 extra-time win over Crystal Palace.

The Toon can nevertheless be backed at 17/2 to claim victory with the draw priced at a similarly tempting 9/2 but rather than betting on the Tynesiders to win for the first time in 12 against the Citizens back one of the following three bets.

David Silva to score anytime @ 13/8

While the likes of Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko toiled unsuccessfully in front of goal at Upton Park, the one man who did manage to get on the scoresheet was David Silva and with City likely to ring the changes up front, the former Valencia man may be worth backing to score.

Silva found the net when the Citizens beat Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park this season and with Manuel Pellegrini keen to keep the club’s League Cup campaign on track, the World Cup winner could well make an appearance at the Etihad.

Manchester City to win 2-0 or 4-0 @ 13/4

This tip is all about the numbers: Manchester City have beaten Newcastle 2-0 or 4-0 in each of their previous five meetings, with two 4-0 wins recorded at the Etihad and a further three 2-0 victories coming at St James Park.

City have also scored either two or four goals in four of their five wins in the Premier League this term while Newcastle have failed to find the net against the Sky Blues in any of their last five meetings. Need I say more?

The same number of goals in both halves @ 14/5

A quick look at recent results involving the two clubs reveals a startling symmetry to the goalscoring in previous games with an equal number of goals netted in each of the previous four Premier League meetings between the sides.

City scored either side of half-time in their two most recent 2-0 wins while their two 4-0 home victories over the Toon came with two goals in each half and you can get great odds on a repeat.
