Premier League Half-Term Reports: Green shoots for West Brom
Published:Team name: West Brom
Current League position: 14th
Giddy Highs: Winning at White Hart Lane
Having lost convincingly at Swansea then home to Everton, not many punters would have included a West Brom win at Tottenham in their weekend accumulators next.
Win is exactly what the Baggies did though, 1-0, which sparked a much-needed mini revival following a haul of just two points from their opening quartet of Premier League fixtures.
Crushing Lows: Narrowly losing to Liverpool to halt wining momentum
As mentioned above, defeating Spurs briefly lit the blue touch paper for the Baggies who went on to knock Hull out the Capital One Cup before posting back-to-back league triumphs when tonking Burnley 4-0 at the Hawthorns.
However, just as the wind had taken their sails, Liverpool capsized them with a galling 2-1 defeat just before the international break.
Shining Star: Saido Berahino
West Brom’s new pin-up showed flashes of his net-finding abilities last season and has taken it by storm so far this. Five top-flight goals have been rattled in and six in all competitions. At just 21, there is much to come from this young star.
Biggest Disappointment: Victor Anichebe
The former Everton man has many attributes of a top striker, not least ox-like strength to hold the ball up, but he’s always lacked the most important one; the ability to score.
Currently recovering from a knock, Anichebe started three of the four games he’s featured in and not bothered the scoreboard.
Best bet for the rest of the season: Berahino: Top Midlands club @ 11/2
Grade: C-
Final Thoughts:
Survival will of course be number one on Irvine and West Brom’s target list for the season and considering the gloom which hung over the Hawthorns early doors, this now looks a distinct possibility.
When things get dicey, having a natural-born goal grabber up front is the most valuable commodity.
