Should Spurs consider selling Adebayor to QPR in January?

| 09.10.2014

There are few certainties in modern football, but if there is one thing you can rely on, it’s that Harry Redknapp will try and sign a former charge of his any chance he gets.

With QPR in a hell of a pickle, sitting bottom of the Premier League after seven matches having scored just four times, their manager is eyeing up two strikers he knows well to boost their ranks in January.

Jermain Defoe is an obvious target given his apparent lack of love for his current situation at MLS side Toronto, but more interesting are the reports linking Emmanuel Adebayor with a move to Loftus Road.

The Togolese striker has been in poor form for Spurs so far this season, scoring just once in eight matches, and continues to represent a real dilemma for Lilywhites managers.

When on form, there is perhaps no-one better in Spurs’ price-range than Adebayor, who registered 17 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League under Redknapp in 2010/11.

However, when the 30-year-old is not at the races, he quickly becomes a millstone around the neck of the Lilywhites’ attacking play, especially as Mauricio Pochettino tries to implement a hard-working, pressing style.

That lack of motivation might be exacerbated if Adebayor feels he is too good for QPR, and the Super Hoops might be wiser avoiding another ageing big name who’ll demand big wages, but would it be smart for Spurs to cash in if they can?

The risk for the Lilywhites would be leaving themselves completely short up front, as Roberto Soldado continues to underwhelm and youngster Harry Kane is perhaps not reliable enough to be first-choice.

Signing a Premier League calibre forward is unlikely to be easy in the winter window, and Spurs would have to spend many times what they would receive for Adebayor.

All in all, it might be a move that makes little sense for anyone, as Pochettino will be short of forwards and QPR overloaded with under-motivated mercenaries. Adebayor will surely stay put in January.

Following their disastrous start to the campaign, QPR are now 4/6 to be relegated this term.
