Super League Grand Final: 3 top Wigan bets at Old Trafford

| 10.10.2014

Super League’s Grand Final rolls into Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium for the 17th year this weekend, when north-west giants Wigan Warriors and St Helens meet at this stage for only the third time.

The former go into the clash as defending champions and haven’t lost a Grand Final since 2003, while the latter last lifted the trophy a year before that.

Read on for the three top punts on show:

Wigan Warriors to win by 11-15 @ 11/2

Sorry Saints lost all five Grand Finals between 2007-11, four times against Leeds and once to their next opponents.

Even at punchy 15/8 odds in a two-horse race, it’s hard to have faith in Nathan Brown’s men overcoming their Old Trafford hoodoo.

Every Grand Final since 2002 has seen the sides competing separated by at least eight points, with Wigan downing Warrington 30-16 this time last year.

Josh Charnley to score the first try @ 7/1

The Chorley native has run in an incredible tally of 122 tries in 112 games so far for Wigan, including seven in his last six appearances.

Joel Tomkins went over first in the semi-final against Warrington Wolves and rates a live outsider at 20/1 for more of the same, but the dual-code centre can’t hold a candle to his 23-year-old teammate for sheer consistency.

Sean O’Loughlin to be named Man of the Match @ 8/1

The Harry Sunderland trophy has been won by a member of the triumphant team in every Grand Final since 2002, when Bradford Bull’s Paul Deacon was named top egg chaser despite his side’s 19-18 defeat.

Leeds loose forward and captain Kevin Sinfield picked up this prize in 2009 and 2012, so the Warriors’ direct equivalent, 31-year-old local boy O’Loughlin, rates a sound bet.
