Could West Ham hit the heights of the Champions League soon?
Published:It’s not very often that West Ham get compared to Atlético Madrid, but with the start they have made, even some of the Upton Park playing staff are seeing similarities with the Spanish champions.
Having arrived at the Boleyn from Barcelona on loan in August, Alex Song has been encouraged by the start the Hammers have made to their Premier League campaign.
With five wins from their nine league match, including three straight victories recently, Sam Allardyce’s side find themselves in the heady position of fourth in the table.
And following the Cameroonian midfielder’s latest comments Ladbrokes are offering 10/1 that the Irons are tasting European football next season, as part of their Breaking Bets series.
Or for Irons fans looking more long-term, it is 7/4 that their side qualify for the Champions League or Europa League before the start of the 2019/20 season.
Song has been an integral part of the West Ham midfield this season, and will be key to future successes if David Gold and David Sullivan can convince the former Arsenal man to extend his stay in the East End.
Speaking to The Mirror this week, Song gave some words of encouragement to Hammers’ fans:
“The future of the club is very good. That’s why I chose to come here. In Spain nobody was expecting anything from Atlético Madrid and look at how well they are doing. The way West Ham are looking now, in the next five years they will be one of the best clubs in England”.
Even if the form drops off this campaign, and the club aren’t able to hold on to their current Champions League berth (for which they are priced at 33/1 to do), the future certainly looks rosy for the Claret and Blues.
With a move to the Olympic Stadium in the offing, the attraction for players to move to the capital could increase, and if Sam Allardyce and his scouting team can continue to pull off the coup of securing players of Song’s ilk as well as picking up bargains like Diafra Sakho and Aaron Cresswell, who knows how high the bubbles can fly?
