Wigan Warriors to reach second straight final but it won’t be a walkover

Published:

There was little doubt during Wigan Warriors’ 57-4 mauling of Huddersfield last week that the 2013 Super League champions were in no mood to mess about when it came to the business of defending their title.

That performance will leave tonight’s opponents Warrington questioning how they will go about containing Shaun Wane’s men.

The Wolves will certainly need to improve on recent results that have seen them win just five of their last nine – hardly title-winning form.

Their chances are probably reflected in their price which sees them as underdogs at 2/1, with Wigan available at 2/5, and the unlikely draw at 18/1.

While there appears to be little value in backing a home win at such restrictive odds, here are our three best bets for the action at the DW Stadium from across the markets.

Wigan to win by 1-12 points @ 7/4

The Warriors may have the biggest points difference in the Super League (+405) by some margin, but we are not expecting a big win here.

That said we fully anticipate them bagging their fourth straight win over the Wolves, having recorded a 24-20 victory over Warrington two weeks ago. Of the last three wins over tonight’s rivals, the biggest margin was just 14 points.

The visitors have also been dealt a blow in that they could be without influential full back Matty Russell, who suffered a nasty facial injury last week.

Joel Monaghan to score two or more tries @ 3/1

While the hosts have a plethora of attacking enforcements, a lot of Warrington’s dangerous play comes through Monaghan.

The winger has gone over 28 times in the Super League this season, topping the scoring charts in the competition.

He bagged two tries when the sides met in September and looks cracking value to pick up another brace in Wigan.

Joe Burgess to score the first try @ 8/1

Despite their large number of dangermen, it may be a spot of value to back Burgess to open proceedings for Wigan.

The 19-year-old has got them off the mark in two of their last three games and seems to come flying out of the blocks.
