World Matchplay quarters: Reed spearheads Ryder Cup star treble

Published:

Graeme McDowell’s Volvo World Matchplay defence may have met an unexpectedly premature end, but our other tip for the title, Patrick Reed, is into the last eight and the American is fancied as one of three Ryder Cup participants to make the semis.

Team USA’s star of the Ryder Cup continued his excellent matchplay form from Gleneagles to reach the knock-out stages and has now shrunk from 8/1 into 5s for overall glory.

It may not seem like daredevil tipping to plump for three of the four favourites left in the draw, but paying out at odds of 3/1 there’s plenty to get excited about.

Patrick Reed to beat George Coetzee @ 8/13

Fast becoming America’s answer to Ian Poulter, Reed is developing into a fierce and fearless matchplay competitor.

Once again on debut he has shown the skills which landed him two PGA Tour wins last season and helped him hoard 3 ½ Ryder Cup points at the first attempt by topping his group at the London Golf Club.

Victor Dubuisson v Mikko Ilonen @ 4/7

Another Ryder Cup rookie to have greatly impressed at Gleneagles was Frenchman Dubuisson, who also topped his group here in Kent with two out of three wins.

Although his opponent Ilonen managed to match that record to set up this encounter, we’re backing the man sitting eighth in the Race to Dubai standings, boasting a pair of top-10 finishes in the last two majors, to get the job done.

Henrik Stenson to beat Jonas Blixt @ 4/7

Playing alongside Justin Rose at Gleneagles, 2013’s double-Tour-winning Stenson reminded the world of the exquisite touch that had sometimes deserted him during this difficult follow-up season.

Ominously unbeaten thus far in Kent, which included dumping out last year’s beaten World Matchplay finalist Thongchai Jaidee; in this sort of fettle he should overpower his countryman who is W,L,D so far at London GC.
