3 things we learned from the Premier League this weekend

Published:

Burnley are on the brink of a boom

The game against Hull was Burnley’s first of a five-game stretch in which three of their opponents sit in the bottom five spots in the league.

That they were able to secure their first top-flight win of the season is a huge positive going into games with Aston Villa (at home) and QPR (away).

Sean Dyche’s men are still 1/4 certainties for relegation according to Ladbrokes, but continued point-accumulation against those around them will help to ease such a price.

The time to judge Southampton approaches

Not many are clinging to Chelsea’s coattails at the moment, but Southampton are making a good fist of it after their 2-0 win over Leicester left them four points off the Blues.

At this point last season, the Saints were posing a similar threat to the top-four as they are currently. Then they played Arsenal, Chelsea (twice), Manchester City, Everton and Tottenham over the course of the next nine fixtures and claimed just one point to fall from third to ninth.

In their next 10 games, Ronald Koeman’s men will face City, Arsenal (twice), Manchester United (twice), Everton and Chelsea. You get the feeling the fixture gods don’t particularly like them very much.

QPR must find a ruthless streak

Both of the Hoops’ wins this have come at Loftus Road, as have their two best performances although those games only returned them one point.

Having cruelly self-destructed in the loss to Liverpool, Redknapp’s strugglers again let a late goal tarnish a spirited showing against the league’s upper-classes, when drawing 2-2 with Man City.

Their form infront of their own fans will largely determine their bid for survival. But, unless the late lapses are eradicated, simply playing well won’t be enough to keep them up.
